Week 10 Homework
http://draftsanford.cjb.net/
I searched around to find a Presidential Candidate Website of someone that is not that well known that I do not know their political views before hand so I can write a good rhetorical analysis of the website.
So I decided to do Mark Sanford at the above website.
The main page of Mr. Sanford's web site is very plain and not very eye catching at all, the font they used is a small times roman on a white background it makes his site seem very cold and uninviting. As for the pictures he has on the site there is only one of himself and it is a standard head shot and he is smiling which is a good point.
To make this site more eye drawing to the voter I would have had a color background a more appealing font in a accent color that would pop out at you. I would have used a more family oriented pictures since states Conservative values on his main page. Instead of listing his views just in a paragraph form I think it would catch the viewers attention more if he had the site arranged with symbols to go with his stated ideals. Follow up on those ideas with examples of how they would work.
On his page list I think the click on symbol could be more political since he is running for office the short phrase leads are good they are to the point. Once you go to the selected page you are again hit with that cold font and paragraph style they need to be more colorful and again much more appealing to the audience he is trying to communicate to. I myself would lean more to the patriotic this is just my opinion of the Conservative audience he is conveying his message to.
I know it is good to put all your past accomplishments on the campaign trail when you are running for office, but don't make it a listing I think it would work better if he offered his platform and why he believes it would work and tie it into his past decisions. Make it so the average person understands his thoughts a beliefs and where they will eventually lead to in the future.

Week 9
Idea for a Class Video Project.
a. Warsaw Wave Travel Soccer To show what kind of program it is and what it has to offer the kids and young adults that love the game of Soccer
b. Soccer players and spectators of the sport
c. The Goals of the Club
1.to develop quality soccer players through instruction in the fundamental skills of the game, strategy, competition and sportsmanship.
2.program is not a recreational program but is a competitive environment where commitment, practice, effort and sportsmanship are emphasized.
d. Show a little bit of each age group at practice and each level of skill according to that age group then show some parts of actual games and tournaments.
e. On the Soccer fields
f. Nothing that isn't already available at the fields at practice or at the games
g. The club teams of all age groups it should be no problem to convince them to be in the video because it will allow them to show there love for the sport.
h. Children of all ages and parents of children will be my audience. I want them to see what benefits can come of playing for the Warsaw Wave Soccer club. I want them to to see the values that the coaches and team mates can achieve by working together as a team. How hard work can move them to accomplish great things not only in the sport but how they can use it in everyday life. I also want to point out the physical aspects of the game how soccer players have great endurance and physical benefits of staying in shape not just for one season but to seasons both spring and fall. Keeping children active can help them stay away from today's pressures.

The three above photos were taken by Annie Leibowitz whom my partner and I are doing our research project on. The first Photo with Lennon is a rather famous photo It just jumps out at you. The second photo with Johnny and June Cash I like how it is framed not like a regular portrait but in the practice of thirds the fact that the two are facing different directions and yet it shows the love that these two individuals had for each other. The Third photo really to me is my favorite of what I have found in Black and White a simple object that shows so much detail and says so much in just one frame.

Photojournalist Examples

Photography by: W. Eugene Smith
I believe photojournalist speak with both words and pictures and they sometimes are able to show things to a viewer that may not be able to be said in words. Most often they are the terrible deeds of the world, my example shows where W. Eugene Smith was able to show both the good and bad in this world not just weighing the scales to one or the other.

Photojournalist and Their Roles in Society
I have to say that I agree with most of the article, a photojournalist speaks in two different languages word and photos. I t is good to have those journalist who record a side of a story that may otherwise go untold and to raise the awareness of certain situations by using pictures because they do speak more loudly then words. The only thing is I myself do not want to dwell on just the bad of every situation I would hope that with everything that goes bad in this world that there is still some good and would like to see both sides and not dwell on just one or the other.
Poster Analysis
Pg 342
The poster reminds me of the Uncle Sam's "I want you" poster, it really isn't not as powerful as the original because it is done in neutral colors. I believe that it would have more of an impact if it had color even if it was just the wording. I believe it would giveit more punch and catch your attention. The only thing that caught my eye when I turnedthe page were the dark colors around the ear area and I focused more on that to figure out what it was. I guess what I am saying is it really did not impact me too much at all.

Week 5 Reading Questions
Page 337
- The posters shown range from the late 1930's to early 2000 the way I based my answered was not merely on the poster I just happened to know that the first poster the Wizard of Oz was released in 1939 it would have been hard to guess to figure the year by the poster because the photo of the cast are in custom and unless you knew who the actors were to guess by their star power it would be kind of deceiving. The second poster for the movie Buffalo Soldiers I estimate to be early 2000 because of the actor presented on the poster and the camo type fatigues were used later by the army. The third poster of Vertigo I place in the late 1950's I base this opinion on the actors and their style of dress and the fact they list it as an Alfred Hitchcock masterpiece. The fourth and final poster is easily a 2000 film mainly because it is in my time frame the computer imaging look of the poster and the web site listing at the bottom.
- To figure the kind of movies represented by the posters starting with number one a family story book movie because it is based on a children's book and the way the actors are dressed in character on the poster. Buffalo Soldiers a comedy because of the subtitle on the poster " Steal all that you can steal" and " a story so outrageous you couldn't make it up". The third poster because it is an Alfred Hitchcock movie has to be a thriller and the front shows a drawing of two people in somewhat of a life saving clutch. The fourth and final poster the Matrix Revolution is a sci fi going by the computer imagery and the style of dress that the characters are wearing plus the title its self.
- For the time period the Wizard of Oz poster would have been very bright in color the use of b&w photos with the color drawings was a precursor of what was going to happen in the movie as going from b&w to color. The Buffalo Soldiers uses the flag as a bright catch your eye to draw you in. Vertigo uses the red to catch your eye then the yellow to push out the title also the type of lettering used also catches your eye. The matrix uses it black to fade to light green and its lighted lettering to push the title at you and give you that futuristic feel.
- Wizard of Oz goes from top to bottom the title is in red catching your eye. Buffalo Soldiers draws you in to the title then to the man on the front who then is pointing up to the title. Vertigo draws you to the couple on the front first because it is placed on a red background and makes the picture pop out at you then to the drawing at the right hand side that points you to the top then your eyes tend to go to the yellow showing the title.

Rhetorical Analysis:
Above are are just a few of the pictures I enjoyed in this collection I feel that in these photographs it show just how proud and brave these people were of their lives. And this was taught at a very young age to their children. It also has the essence of a time lost when people really did live one with the openness of the land and nature..
Week 4 Homework

In the above photographs by Alfred Palmer I believe that they were showing that women could do a mans job but still be a woman. The reasoning for this is thought is the women are dressed nicely and wearing make up. In my opinion bit nicer than I believe they would have been on a normal work day for the job they are shown doing. Notice that they are posed for the picture and smiling giving you a sense that they enjoy the job they are doing. Like they are saying come joy the party and get a job you will love it.

Page 352
On the three photographs I feel that they seem to all be mother and child in the photos I think in most cultures we would tend to feel they are loving relationships a way to show that love and child to others in the photo. Maybe the only thing I would feel I should be careful about is maybe it isnt mother and child maybe it is grandmother and grandchild.

- It shows the emptiness of the area and what the actions of mining and the after effects of pollutants have done to the land in other words it is not a place for people and or all living things to be.
- It tells the story why it is empty not fit for man.
- If theses photo were in regular format it would not give you the feeling of how large the problem was it would downplay the vastness of the areas.
- The black and white helps confirm the cold and darkness of the area it punctuates the concept that the mining ruined the area.
- The photos make you feel you are sitting right on the edge of it looking in. It helps to create a feeling of emptiness.
Analyzing Documentry Photography Questions
Page 349
1. I would guess the photo was taken in the 1930's and in the winter time because of the style and type of clothing. The location the photo was taken I am using the railing in the background as a reference and the fact that there is nothing else in the background except sky so I would guess high on a building, ship or bridge in the northern part of the country maybe New York, Chicago or even Seattle.
2. I would say that they know each other perhaps the far right people are husband and wife and the girl on the far left is a daughter. I am thinking this by what age they look. But I also because the women have their hands folded in front of them and the gentleman has his hands in his pockets maybe they were just acquaintances.
3. I would say the people live pretty well by the clothing for instance the woman on the far right is wearing a fur coat and both women are wearing jewelry. The man seems to be wearing a very nice suit with a nice over coat. As for their personalities of the people a maybe alittle high class snobbish.
4. The photo was probably taken in the moment not really planned because the man has his head turned. Maybe they are on holiday and they were able to have someone snapped the photo for them

This photo shows the rule of thirds and the car is small to the vast background. Even though the car is small in the photo your eyes go right to it because it is darker then the background. I am also thinking it might also fall in the category of near to far because of the distance of the car and how the surroundings seem to engulf it.Friday, February 2, 2007
Arrangement

In this Photo by Charles Moore you are in the scene as it had happened years ago. I would say this would fall in the catagory of "before and after". In the sense that we have come along way since this photograph was shot first taken. The fact that it was taken at an angle like it was taken in a hurry or maybe making it like a dream state asking yourself "Is this really happening?"
Ernast Hass B&W Photograph
Ernst Haas Color Photo
What I liked about this photograph is how the color and light pops out at you. I believe this is because everything is very wet taken right after a heavy rain so you have the reflection of light with in the water. I do not believe this would have worked as well in black and white i do not think the contrast would have shown as well and the detail would have been washed out.Saturday, January 27, 2007
Charles Moore Photograph

This photo describes a story of hate towards another human being a hate so strong that the people in the photo will go to horrific extremes to push their beliefs on others. The picture of the cross burning in the night show the darkness of the act much like the Islamic extremist burning the American flag and pictures of our President because they hate our way of living and our beliefs.
Week 1 Assignment
Sorry this is so late my daughter had her tonsils removed and she has been having a little bit of a hard time recuperating so I am playing catch up>>>>>>
After reading the MSN report and looking at videos on you tube it really makes me mad that we as Americans can be swayed so much by the media and or what small terrorist groups put on the Internet.
My opinion of the war? I wish we had never entered it but now that we did I think we should finish what we started. When Bush SR was in office it was an unpopular idea to go in and finish the job and congress at that time mostly democrat pressured the withdraw and in my opinion made things worse when it came to terrorism. Now we are in the same situation what do you or the news media thinks will happen if we pullout now? Will we have another Vietnam? Will be safe from terrorism here in the states?
My thoughts are, we will make the terrorist even stronger and I believe that the groups will grow and get larger especially with the way they use the modern devices to spread their distorted messages. We need to prove there messages wrong and get Iraq set up in a government that benefits all involved. The factions are going to have to come together but we are dealing with a culture that we don't really understand.
Sometimes I think we just need to close our borders and worry about just the US and stop being the Savior of all the other countries.

Historic Photographer

For this Assignment I have partnered with Kevin Cox and we have decided to do our blog on photographer Annie Leibovitz because of her with work with many notable people and her work with Rolling Stone magazine. We also like her interesting style of photography by almost catching her subjects in a simple but intimate form and at time controversial . For example some of her subjects have been John Lennon, The Rolling Stones, Warhol, and countless other personalities.
Not only did she do photographs for Rolling Stone Magazine she also served as a concert- tour photographer for the Rolling Stones in 1975, as a featured portrait photographer for Vanity Fair and Vogue, did the advertizing campaign for American Express and has also has published 6 books of her various works.

Annie Leibovitz was born in Connecticut in 1947. In 1969 she went to King Solomon’s temple in Israel. In 1970 she had her first photograph published by the magazine “Rolling Stone.” She graduated in 1971 and became “Rolling Stones’ principal photographer later in 1973. Her main photography influences were Henri-Cartier-Bresson and Robert Frank.

She went on tour with the Rolling Stones in 1975 where she became their official photographer for their world tour. Much of her work is referenced from the time she spent with the Stones.
Shortly before John Lennon’s death in 1980, Leibovitz took a picture of Lennon naked with Yoko Ono, which is now a very famous picture. After all, it was the last picture before the murder.
In 1983, Leibovitz became the first contributing photographer to “Vanity Fair”, producing several portraits throughout the years. In 1984 she was named photographer of the year by the American Society of Magazine Photographers.
In 1985 she photographed the World Cup Games in Mexico. 1987 is when she produced the ‘Portraits’ campaign for American Express. This production won her many awards including the Decade award from Advertising Age (1987).
She opened her own studio in New York City in 1990 and shortly after received the Infinity Award for applied photography from the International Center for Photography. She became one of only two living photographers to have an exhibition of her work at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC. Finally, in 1999 she was made a member of the Art Directors Club ‘Hall of Fame’.

Cartoons
This image moved me because before 911 we seemed to have taken a lot of our freedoms in this country for granted. Who would have ever thought that another country or terrorist group would inflict so much pain and fear to us the US.
Many things changed that day, I would say the country came together in a time of crisis. Patriotism was way up and the thoughts in Washington was more unified, party lines were dropped and the government actually worked together instead of bickering over who was going to have more control. Its just sad that was short lived.
This image shows the rising of something good and patriotic out of devastation. One thing I noticed the bloom is not a huge ever growing site. It is not totally healing the the original site but looks as though it is stunted unable to keep going because the patriotism is gone and the idea of politicians working together seems to have been pushed to the wayside.
Let me tell you a bit about myself
Hi!!! I am 40 something mother who is currently a student at IPFW in Warsaw, Indiana. I am pursuing a career in the medical field either in Radiology or Nursing. I have not quite decided which one I would like to do more so I am just taking it one step at a time and hope the right choice will fall into place.
Believe it or not I am having alot of fun, I think more fun now then I would have if I had gone to college directly out of highschool. I believe its becauseIam more focused on my goals and how want to achieve those goals.
I Stay pretty busy with my childrens activities they are heavily involved with 4-H, soccer, basketball and track so by the time one season is ending another one is starting.
The reason for doing this blog is for my J210 visual communications class.
